Become a CHASS F1RST Peer Mentor 2016-2017

CHASS F1RST is a program for first-year students entering into the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. The program invites students to participate in unique learning communities designed to ensure that participants succeed and excel in the first year at the University of California, Riverside. Students in the program enroll in year- long course sequence (CHASS Connect, PRBS Path, and Exploratory Scholars) or a quarter- long sequence(Fall Transitions) and enjoy the benefits of significant interaction with program faculty and graduate teaching assistants, personalized advisement, and peer facilitated workshops.

Peer Mentor responsibilities include:

  • Develop lesson plans in collaboration with faculty and the CHASS Connect staff and teach small groups of students on a weekly basis, being prompt and well prepared for each session.
  • Reach out to and maintain contact with students enrolled in the program through e-mail or phone, residence hall visits, and participation in campus social and cultural activities.
  • Meet with program participants one-on-one and in small groups to assess student needs; assist students with academic, social and personal concerns; and refer students to appropriate campus resources.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 2.5 cumulative grade point average and in good academic standing.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of students from a variety of racial, ethnic, national, political, religious, physical and sexual orientation, and socio-economic backgrounds. Sensitivity to varying levels of academic preparedness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with students.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty partners in the program.
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work with and relate to faculty and staff.
  • Ability to respond to students in a helping manner. (Teaching or mentoring experience preferred.)
